Veranstaltungstyp: digital
Due to the present situation regarding the pandemic, the seminar will be conducted as a digital course. During the first online session on 9 October the structure, contents, requirements and realisation of the course will be outlined, discussed and modified if necessary, based on your interests. I consider it important that your individual research interests will be catered for as far as possible and that you can work on questions which are relevant to you. If the conditions regarding the pandemic allow, we shall have a longer final meeting in class at the university in January 2021. Between October and January you will do some reading, work on small assignments and discuss your ideas, findings and questions in video conferences. We will meet online for input, consultations and feedback each Friday from 16.15 to 17.45 hrs. My office hour will be after each week's session.

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar looks at English language teachers from a variety of perspectives while considering a number of different qualitative research approaches and methods, in particular documentary research, case studies, action research and narrative research. We will deal with aspects of teacher education and training, with the need for continuing professional development, with several elements of professional teacher behaviour and last but not least with job satisfaction and teacher well-being. This wide range of topics allows us to encounter and evaluate suitable research methods and procedures, e.g. interviews, observation, questionnaires, hermeneutics and qualitative content analysis among others, as well as consider fundamental questions of research, e.g. research ethics, researcher bias, research politics. My goals are twofold: introducing you to the process of research and to certain important research procedures (maybe as preparation for your final thesis) and combining this with a reflection on what it means to become, work and develop as a language teacher.
