Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course lecture explores popular media as an object of cultural studies, introducing students to theoretical approaches, key practices and selected issues relevant to the study of culture/s .
Major Topics:
Historical development of "Culture"
CCCS-concepts of "culture"
Concepts of "folk-culture"
Storey's definitions of Popular Culture
Development of "popular culture"/mass-culture in Modernism & Postmodernism
Postmodern capitalist consumer-culture (perspectives: Marxism, Frankfurt-School, pop-art)
Concepts of Subculture & Counter-culture: Historical development, theoretical approaches; example: The Beats (1950s) - Ginsberg "Howl"
- Gendered, Sexed, and Racialized Cultural Concepts of "the Other"
We will especially look at meaning making in the production and consumption of cultural artifacts, investigate the dynamics of representation, power and knowledge, and relate these issues to questions of constructions of "race"(vs ethnicity), gender and class. Theoretical models and perspectives will be constantly grounded in practical examples, focused on but not limited to visual cultural material.

This lecture course will provide students with an analytical and historical introduction to the subject of Cultural Studies.
