Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course lecture explores popular media as an object of cultural studies, introducing students to theoretical approaches, key practices and selected issues relevant to the study of culture/s .
Major Topics:
Historical development of "Culture"
CCCS-concepts of "culture"
Concepts of "folk-culture"
Storey's definitions of Popular Culture
Development of "popular culture"/mass-culture in Modernism & Postmodernism
Postmodern capitalist consumer-culture (perspectives: Marxism, Frankfurt-School, pop-art)
Cultural Icons
Concepts of Subculture & Counter-culture: Historical development, theoretical approaches; example: The Beats (1950s) - Ginsberg "Howl"
- Gendered, Sexed, and Racialized Cultural Concepts of "the Other"
We will especially look at meaning making in the production and consumption of cultural artifacts, investigate the dynamics of representation, power and knowledge, and relate these issues to questions of constructions of "race"(vs ethnicity), gender and class.
