Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This survey lecture course sets out to provide the background in history, geography and population (immigration history and social identities, "race" and ethnicity) necessary for a deeper understanding of USAmerican life and arts in a foreign-language-learning context. Special sessions in the second half of the semester will deal with the country's political system (especially after 9/11 and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security), USAmerican "imperialism" and global hegemony (at the time of posting this, the US Congress debates a punitive strike against Syria), and contemporary civil rights issues, with a focus on the main ethnic minority groups, Hispanics, African Americans/Blacks, Native Americans/Indians, and Asian Americans.
Along the way, we will look at some historical, cultural and ideological differences between the United States and Canada.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This will be based on a final 90-minute written exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This course is designed to introduce students to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of U.S.-American culture(s).
