Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this course we will analyse five English novels which were written and published in the 21st century: These are very different texts, variants of various novelistic subgenres, postcolonial, detective, social satire cum tale of obsession, espionage, 'coming-of-old-age'. We will look at structural as well as narratological aspects, character construction and thematic issues and, essentially, attempt to trace new aesthetic features of English fiction of the new millenium.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in discussions in class, research paper of 20-25 pages for students in the diploma program and the teacher educ. program; 11 000 words for BA-students, final essay.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Introduction to English novels of the last five years; placing the texts in the major trends in contemporary English fiction; narrative and thematic analysis of recent novels employing a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches.
Prüfungsstoff
Introduction to narratology and contextualization of the texts; students' presentations of selected topics, class discussion.
