Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar will focus on works of fiction by Irish writers of the 20th and 21st centuries dealing with family life and domestic scenes in the context of Ireland. The texts discussed will include Anne Enright's The Gathering (2007) - a novel awarded the "Man Booker Prize" in 2007 - and short stories by Frank O'Connor, Colm Toibin, Patricia Scanlan, Claire Keegan, John McGahern, William Trevor, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne, Clare Dowling and others. The reading of the texts will be related to empirical reality by referring to the concept of the Irish family and the roles of motherhood and fatherhood as outlined in the Irish Constitution of 1937, as well as to the impact of the divorce law implemented in 1996 and to recent sociological studies, carried out by Eurostat (2006), on male and female attitudes to family size in Ireland and other countries within the EU-25.
