Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

What do we mean when we say 'English'? Do we take it to be synonymous with 'British', as, not infrequently, is the popular practice? Or do we simply use it as an umbrella term when we are too lazy to distinguish between different national/regional identities in the British Isles?
This course will concern itself with images of England and the English as perpetuated/discussed in contemporary drama (and film). Plays to be studied include Richard Bean: 'The English Game' and 'England People Very Nice', Jez Butterworth: 'Jerusalem', Clifford Oliver: 'My England' as well as the film 'This Is England' (dir. Shane Meadows).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements for credit: regular attendance, active participation in class, PowerPoint presentation, written final test.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This course aims to contextualise the 'Englishness' debate by close scrutiny of a representative sample of texts. Our methodology will predominantly be that of imagology, i.e. the perception of stereotypes of Self and Other in the antagonistic contexts of national and cultural identities.

Prüfungsstoff

Inter-active (oral presentations, class-room discussion, short introductory lectures).
