Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents: The course is primarily intended for (advanced) students of "Unterrichtsfach Englisch" (UFE). It will offer a selection of short stories of the 20th and 21st centuries (by British, American and Irish writers) featuring teachers as main characters in both class-room situations and/or in their private lives. In their interaction with pupils these pedagogues - including teachers of primary-, grammar- and comprehensive-schools as well as university colleges and driving schools - employ diverse methods, including unconventional and controversial ones. Some of the teachers are shown to have character traits that would seem to conflict with the general notion of a "role model". Students are encouraged to assess critically the didactic skills and class-room situations portrayed and to consider if or why the stories under discussion might also be suitable for teaching in the EFL (grammar-school) class-room. Despite the course's obvious focus on pedagogical issues, however, it is also conceived as a course within literary studies; hence the literary aspects (on both the "story level" and the "discourse level", in particular narratology and its function) will likewise be considered.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements: Regular attendance; active participation in all the discussions in class; one presentation per participant (PPT, max. 15 mins per speaker); final essay (400 words+) to be written in class, which requires in-depth knowledge of all the primary texts and of the topics discussed during the semester.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: To familiarize students with "virtual" class-room situations and potential role-models in view of their professional career; to advance their theoretical knowledge in pedagogy and teaching methodologies; to provide future teachers of English with teaching materials; to deepen their skills in the literary analysis of short fiction; to enhance students' proficiency in oral and written English; to further develop students' teaching- and IT-presentation skills.

Prüfungsstoff

Methods: Interactive, computer-aided teaching with students' presentations (individuals or small groups) combined with plenum discussions. (The use of the e-learning platform "Fronter" is being considered).

Texts: A "Reader" containing the short stories dealt with during the semester can be purchased at the Copy-Studio (Schwarzspanierstraße 10) from 2 March, 2011.
