Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this survey of three centuries of English literary history, we will investigate how drama, narrative fiction and poetry responded to the numerous radical changes in science, philosophy, politics, economy and social history that have occurred since the end of the seventeenth century. Assessment will be on the basis of a final written exam.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students will be provided with a contextualising framework which will enable them to read texts as complex responses to their respective cultural, social, historical, political, scientific, philosophical and economic environment. Students are advised to take this lecture course after having successfully completed the introductory course on the study of literatures in English.

Lecture, home study, written exam.
Literatur
A reader with extracts from non-fictional sources and key passages from literary texts will be provided. Some of the longer texts are in Abrams, ed. Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol. 2. Copies of the novels discussed during the term (Defoe, Robinson Crusoe; Shelley-Wollstonecraft, Frankenstein; Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway) will be available in one of the campus bookshops.
