Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This survey will outline the history of English literature from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th Century. Beginning with Chaucer and his Canterbury Tales, its emphasis will be on the history of drama before Shakespeare and on Shakespeare himself, on prose and verse romance and epic, on the Metaphysical Poets, and on Restoration drama.

Introduction to and overview of canonical works of British literature.

Lecture course; application of various literary theories and cultural studies approaches; e-learning platform; final written test.
Literatur
Students are expected to prepare for this survey by an intensive reading of the major works dealt with, and by reading selected chapters from a literary history of their choice, for example, Michael Alexander, A History of English Literature (Macmillan pb); Andrew Sanders, The Short Oxford History of English Literature (Oxford UP); Ulrich Seeber (ed.), Englische Literaturgeschichte (Metzler). Many of the texts discussed may be found in the Norton or the Arnold Anthology of British Literature. A reader with key passages from the main primary sources and additional background information will be available at the beginning of the semester.
