Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course will provide students with additional theoretical knowledge and research skills (electronic and conventional) and enhance students' competence in interpreting literary texts from different epochs and various genres (drama, poetry, fiction). The texts discussed in class will include Chaucer's The Miller's Tale (1390), the anonymous domestic tragedy Arden of Faversham (c. 1590), Shakespeare's Measure for Measure (1605), a few Elizabethan love songs, John Donne's The Flea and short stories by Thomas Hardy other authors of short fiction from the literatures of the English speaking world of the 20th and 21st centuries. Participants will be given guidelines for writing scholarly papers and be introduced to the use of a wide range of reference books which are indispensable to the scholarly study of literature. - Considering the fact that a large majority of the students of English are going to be teachers of English, approaches to teaching literature in the EFL classroom will likewise be addressed (albeit only cursorily); participants are expected to include in their PS papers a chapter on how to teach the text under discussion in an Austrian EFL classroom.

Regular attendance, active participation in the discussions, one presentation per participant (about 20 mins); a proseminar-paper in English (3.500 words+; to be handed in one week before the presentation) and a final test, which requires a thorough knowledge of both the course-materials handed out and of all the texts interpreted in class.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
advancing students' theoretical and practical skills in the analysis and interpretation of literary texts, advancing practical skills in writing research papers; developing basic proficiency in teaching literature in the EFL classroom.
