Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The main focus of this course is sociolinguistic field work in the particular context of the study of language attitudes and ideologies. Students will first be introduced to the subject matter of language attitudes and ideologies in a variety of cultural settings, then to the concomitant methodologies of data elicitation and analysis (e.g. the speaker evaluation paradigm). The course culminates in students' own (mandatory) field work projects in which they will collect their own data, and which will be the basis for an oral presentation as well as the final write-up (Proseminararbeit).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Assessment is based on class participation (particularly in discussions based on selected readings); homework assignments; as well as field work, oral presentation and final write-up of participants' own research projects.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The goals of this course are
i) to further develop the research and analytical skills necessary for the study of linguistics, with a particular focus on conducting sociolinguistic field work;
ii) to develop course participants' knowledge and insight in the topic area of language attitudes and ideologies.
