Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this class we will look at English and/or British identities from the 20th and 21st centuries, as they manifest themselves in literary and non-literary texts, but also in areas of fashion, art, music, film, TV and political discourse. Within the context of British- and Englishness, identity has been variously seen as biological on the one hand, and constructed on the other. It is these contradictory discourses that we will be focussing on. We will investigate the performance of English and British identities as well as at the use of flags and other symbols, and see how these relate to political and cultural discourses of nationality and nationalism.
