Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The growing importance of international tourism and the role of English as a lingua franca have led to a vast amount material ranging from information brochures for towns and regions to publicity leaflets for hotels and conference centres being translated into English. Although the quality of these translations has improved in recent years, it is clear that the level of many of them, especially those published on the internet, is still poor.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on the exercises mentioned above, together with a final test. Successful completion of the course will mean that participants will be aware of the pitfalls facing anyone producing translations of such material and how to avoid them, and hence that they themselves should be in a position to produce competent results if they undertake such work in private or a professional context.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of the course is to examine examples of these texts and to develop strategies for a more successful approach to this type of translation.

Prüfungsstoff

Authentic material in English and German will be used as the basis for classwork and homework exercises, and participants will also select their own material to analyse.
