Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Clothing and fashion are forms of visual and material culture that play an important role in social and cultural life. What we wear shapes our bodies and shapes the ways we look at other people’s bodies. We perform our identities via fashion, clothing and our bodies. Fashion is also a major economic force, driven by multinational interests. Young people can endlessly discuss clothing as markers of inclusion or exclusion, which shows that fashion is a powerful means of communication and therefore a very valuable topic in any foreign language classroom. The material we discuss will range from picture books, such as Froggy Gets Dressed to theoretical discussions of fashion as an art form. Integral part of the UE will be the Fashionable Queens conference organised by Monika Seidl and Eva Flicker. Participation is strongly recommended (3-4 Dec 2010, details can be found under www.univie.ac.at/fashionablequeens). You will have the unique opportunity to listen to a number of eminent fashion critics.
