Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will be taught jointly by Prof. Rubik and Prof. Widdowson. Literature is the concern of literary study. But since, as verbal art, it draws on linguistic resources to create its effects, linguistics ought to have something to contribute to literary appreciation. In this course, we want to examine just what kind of contribution this might be, and whether literary and linguistic perspectives in the scrutiny of literary texts complement each other or lead to conflicting interpretations. Various examples from prose fiction, poetry and drama will be used for demonstration and discussion.
