Intercultural Communication

Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

The first session of the seminar on March 11th, 10-12 will be held by Professor Dalton-Puffer and will provide information about the course, especially about the written paper and in-class presentation. Students will begin working on their paper and do some readings and a response essay before Professor Meier begins to teach in May. This enables students to have ample time to prepare for their final written paper and in-class presentation.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will focus on developing an awareness of the relationship between culturally informed perceptions and actual language use in a variety of domains. In establishing a basis for this, frameworks and concepts of intercultural communication will be presented. The approach will be a culture-general approach that develops learners’ awareness of the role culture plays in perceptions of contextual variables, linguistic behavior, and negotiation of meaning and identity. Background topics to be addressed will include, but not be limited to, the following:
Defining intercultural communicative competence
Cultural orientations and dimensions
Critical incidents
Culture and speech act discourse
Communication styles
Intercultural communication in selected domains

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed reading assignments, response essays, a final written project, and an in-class presentation based on the written project. Attendance is compulsory. Students registering for the class must ensure that they can attend the scheduled class meetings and complete the assignments for them.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will develop awareness, knowledge, and skills of intercultural communication, be able to critically read relevant literature in the field, critically discuss relevant issues, and explore ways to incorporate these into their professional domain(s).

Prüfungsstoff

The initial class sessions will be interactive, engaging students in role plays,
simulations, mini-dramas, and discussion. Students will be expected to critically discuss readings and films. Final class sessions will be devoted to student presentations based on their written research papers. The student presentations should also include an interactive aspect. The written paper will be due the middle of July.

A reading list will be made available to students to prepare for the initial sessions.
