Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this historical survey, we will examine some of the most important literary trends and developments in English literary history between the 18th century and the present and relate them to major events and trends in British political and social history. In our analyses of seminal works of English literature we will focus on the historically typical and the aesthetically innovative, on famous writers but also on other art forms (such as painting or architecture) to illustrate the prevailing fashions and changing tastes of each era - from the Augustan age and Romantic literature to the Victorian period, Modernism and Post-modernism.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be on the basis of a final written exam. Homework (for the preparation of the texts on the reading list and self-testing) and information will be provided on the e-learning platform. Students are also recommended to attend the weekly tutorial, which will provide a forum for close readings, repetition of key concepts and questions.
