Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this lecture we will explore menaings of "Britishness" in relation to popular culture. Starting from a set of typical (and stereotypical) assumptions about what it is that seems to define "Britishness" - football and cricket, beer and tea, royals and working class, queuing and hooliganism, Britpop and punk etc. - we will approach the following questions: How is (and was) "Britishness" constructed and represented, especially in popular culture? How do people become national subjects? How does "Britishness" relate to class, gender, race, power, history and geography?
