Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course gives you the chance to look more closely at the various discourses of everyday life about everyday life. By looking at a variety of cultural material (advertising, songs, literary texts, TV shows, newspaper reports, guidebooks etc) we will investigate how everyday meanings about the everyday are constructed and circulated. We will also consider how discourses change and conflict. The focus will be primarily but not exclusively on Britain. Possible aspects of everyday life we might investigate are: food and drink, dress and undress, queuing, sport, going to the pub and many more.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Regular class attendance and participation; short class presentations and other activities; homework tasks (reading, finding material, writing assignments).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
You will gain a deeper understanding of how discourse works and how cultural meanings are constructed in and about our everyday lives.
Prüfungsstoff
It is intended that this course have a collaborative, workshop character. Methods include: small group and class discussions, presentations, collaborative work, readings and written reflections. A reader will be made available but you will also be expected to be active in finding and sharing appropriate materials. You will be expected to have already attended lecture 401 Introduction to Cultural & Regional Studies and lecture 403 British Civilisation.
