Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This survey will consider theatres in the British Isles as cultural capital and focus on the following topics: religious plays of the Middle Ages (pageants), Elizabethan and Jacobean playhouses (bull- and bear-baiting yards, Shakespeare's Globe, indoor theatres), Restoration Theatres, Covent Garden, Drury Lane, provincial theatres, Dublin's Abbey Theatre as a national theatre, Edinburgh (Traverse Theatre), Stratford-upon Avon (Shakespeare Memorial Theatre), the London theatre scene today (esp. Royal Court, Royal National Theatre, The Modern Globe, West End and Fringe).

Requirements for credit: written final test.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

It is the aim of this lecture course to provide an introduction to the theatre history and theatre historiography of the British Isles. It will attempt an overview of the physical givens of theatre and drama in combination with a consideration of the vicissitudes of British and Irish cultural history. In other words, in this course we will study theatres as playing spaces in relation to prevailing traditions of drama and dramaturgy in their respective socio-cultural contexts. The cultural studies approach proposed here will combine aspects of theatre history, theatre architecture, literary and cultural history.

Lecture course; classroom discourse will be supplemented by visual aids (ppt, excerpts from documentary and feature films).
