Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course explores the symbiotic relationship between youth culture and the media. Giving attention to issues of media production, circulation and consumption, the course explores the on-going relationship of mutual dependence that exists between commercially-based media forms and youth cultural (and subcultural) formations. Charting the development of various youth cultural movements from the 1950s to the present day, the course considers how the development of these groups has been related to media industries and other institutions of the commercial market. The course also considers key shifts in the media's representation of young people, and explores the ways these shifts have been related to wider political discourses. Additionally, the module will also consider the development, nature and significance of media texts (music, films, magazines, TV programmes etc.) targeted at the youth market, as well as the history and character of 'alternative media forms such as (subcultural fashions, fanzines, 'independent' record labels, pirate radio etc.).
