Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will explore the nature of the human word-store or 'mental lexicon'. We will be looking at morphology and processes of word-formation, at approaches to word meaning, at phonological and syntactic information in the lexicon, and at formulaic language and pre-fabricated chunks. Furthermore, we will discuss how people learn words (in a first and second language), and how they understand and use them. Finally, we will also acquaint ourselves with the dictionary on the shelf and try to relate it to the one in the head.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participants' own research projects will be based on further and more in-depth reading on selected topics and will be presented in class. Assessment is based on class participation, assignments, presentation and a final paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This course aims to familiarise students with the basics of doing and writing up research. Students will also gain specialised knowledge in the area of the (mental) lexicon.
