Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

CONTENTS
Building on the introductory module (STEOP), this course introduces students to the basics and ethics of academic writing and research methodology. Additionally, students will be made familiar with basic concepts and fundamental problems of English semantics. They will individually investigate one selected topic and submit their findings in the form of a written secondary research paper.

Students are made familiar with:
- The basic principles and ethics of academic research
- Finding and evaluating academic sources
- The basic conventions of academic writing
- Basic concepts and problems in English semantics
- Selected resources and tools used in semantic research

PREREQUISITES
Although this course is on semantics, of which no prior knowledge is assumed, basic knowledge and skills acquired during the STEOP phase will be taken for granted.
We strongly suggest that students have completed at least ILSS1, but ideally also ILSS2 before taking this course. Writing skills such as paragraphing (topic sentence, support, ...) and having a clear line of argumentation are taken for granted and a basic understanding of the structure of citations will prove helpful.

AIMS
Students will be able to carry out a guided literature-based research project in English linguistics building on knowledge acquired in class.

METHODS
Reading, discussions, peer-group interaction, in-class and online exercises, lecturer input, autonomous research
In addition to our regular sessions, head librarian Karin Lach will offer a two-hour tutorial workshop on literature research. Date to be announced.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- Pre-paper activities: bibliography and mini-paper outline
- Mini-paper: 1st draft and final version
- Regular assignments throughout the semester: homework assignments, in-class and online quizzes

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Please, understand that this is a 6-ECTS course, which means about 150 hours of work, only 18 of which are class time. So, you will spend about 8 hours a week in addition to the contact hours working for this course. You need to be able to dedicate that much time to it.

The pass grade is 60%. Assessment is based on:

Pre-paper activities (bibliography and mini-paper outline) --------------------------------------------- 10%
Independently researched and written mini-paper
-- First version ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 40%
-- Second, revised version ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20%
Regular assignments (homework assignments, in-class and online quizzes)---------------- 30%

Minimal requirements:

... in order to pass the course.

Prüfungsstoff

All reading and presented material is relevant for in-class and online quizzes during the semester.
