Student assessment is based on active participation in class, regular readings + answering related questions, a midterm assignment, and the research paper + pre-paper activities.
For the paper each student will choose one aspect related to English semantics, explore it in more detail and write a literature-based research paper.

Part 1: Participation, readings, weekly reading questions, peer feedback 20%
Part 2: Midterm assignment 10%
Part 3: Pre-paper activities (proposal + bibliography, annotated outline) 20 %
Part 4: Paper (first draft, final draft): 50%All parts (1, 2, 3 and 4) must be completed fully and on time.
The overall pass mark is 60%.
Please note, that in order to pass, you must reach a positive grade on at least one of the mini-paper submissions (either first or final draft). Failing both drafts means that you will not pass the course, regardless of the overall points reached.
The paper will be checked with anti-plagiarism software (TurnItIn).Grading scale:
1 (sehr gut) 100-90%
2 (gut) 89-80%
3 (befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (genügend) 69-60%

The course predominately follows:· Valenzuela, Javier. 2017. Meaning in English: an introduction. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.The readings from this book will be made available via the moodle platform, as well as additional further readings.Additionally, students will be expected to independently find and read literature on their selected proseminar paper topic.

Taking the area of English semantics as an example, this course provides students with more detailed insights into one sub-discipline of linguistics - namely semantics - and prepares them for their first small-scale literature-based research project in this area.CONTENTS
After presenting an overview of what the field of semantics encompasses, and what actually hides behind the concept of “meaning”, we will explore the field of English semantics from different angles and through a range of fundamental problems in English semantics. Topics to be covered are, for instance, word meaning, meaning relations between words, figurative meaning, language and thought, or how meaning can be methodologically approached via various methods.In addition, we will discuss the process of literature-based, or secondary, research, as well as basic principles and ethics of academic research. Participants will learn how to find relevant literature on a specific research topic/question, critically analyze, as well as reflect on existing research in the field, and finally synthesize their findings into a first small-scale research paper.METHODS
Methods used in the seminar encompass weekly readings, discussions, peer-group interactions, lecturer input, and – of course – autonomous research. We strongly suggest that students have completed at least ILSS1, but ideally also ILSS2, before taking this course. Writing skills, such as paragraphing, and having a clear line of argumentation are taken for granted.PREREQUISITES
Although this course is on semantics, of which no prior knowledge is assumed, basic knowledge and skills acquired during the STEOP phase will be taken for granted.
