Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In the introductory courses to linguistics the descriptions of various levels of language are offered: phonology, morphology, syntax. Going beyond syntax means enetring the realm of textlinguistics, discourse analysis or discourse studies. This seminar starts with an attempt to delimit the field, its subject matter and scope. In the empirical part of the course it will discuss a number of case studies presenting how to conduct qualitative and quantitative text analyses. The focus of these investigations will be on language and society in a specific cultural context.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Students will be assessed on the basis of in-class participation, solving 3 in-class tasks (30%), oral presentation (20%), and a short (2500-3000 word) paper - empirical study report (50%).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The aim of this seminar is to offer an overview of a range of approaches to discourse analysis, present the criticisms it provokes and to give students hands-on experience in analysing texts.
