Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar offers a new opportunity to study the language of songs in English. On the one hand, songs are texts, like poems. On the other hand songs are sung – with or without a musical accompaniment – and, what is more, new pop songs are increasingly being presented in a multi-media environment, with (often quite sophisticated) video accompaniment.

A first aim of the seminar is to combine linguistic and stylistic analyses of songs in English with a corpus-linguistic approach. A further aim is to consider how these analyses are extended and adapted when performance is taken into account. The final aim is to consider the role and effect of any multi-media video accompaniment.
At its core will be a collection of songs, to be compiled from the favourite songs of each of the seminar participants. The songs will be edited for incorporation into a corpus. In due course, the song texts will become annotated in respect of their inherent linguistic and stylistic features. Through the exploitation of the corpus, it will become possible to reveal common linguistic and stylistic patterns across the songs.

Songs have also come to form one of the informal ways in which English is acquired as a second language. Consideration will also be given both to informal language acquisition and to the role of song in language education.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This course will be held on site if at all possible. During October, when the tutor will be absent because of some necessary treatment at a residential rehab centre (Kur), students will be set homework on the songs which they will each have chosen. Face-to-face teaching will begin during the first week of November. The seminar will culminate in January 2022 with a Song Concert.
