Discourse Studies

5.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 12 - Anglistik
Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

The term 'discourse' is understood in various ways in the humanities and social sciences. Discourse is, on the one hand, viewed as the study of language in use, typically involving units of language beyond sentence length. In this sense, the focus of discourse studies is on the functional analysis of cohesion in text and talk, macrostructures or discourse markers. On the other hand, discourse is also conceived of as the characteristic way in which people interact within a particular group or community. The analysis of discourse in this sense takes us beyond language and investigates the link between text, interaction and social context. Thus we speak of media discourse, political discourse, academic or professional discourse, for example.
