Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

“Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed” (Wilkins 1972: 111).
Taking the area of vocabulary as an example this course provides students with more detailed insights into one area of linguistics and prepares them for their first small-scale research project.
After introducing basic lexical concepts we will explore the topic in more depth, taking a look at word formation, word meaning and word usage. Different aspects of word knowledge, such as spoken form, word associations or collocations, will be investigated in more detail. Students will actively engage with vocabulary tests and will get an introduction to the process of empirical research, data elicitation and basic statistics.

AIMS:
In addition to learning about lexical research participants will learn how to find, reflect on and analyse existing literature on a specific research topic/question and will collect first experiences in planning, conducting and writing about a small-scale linguistic research project.

METHODS:
This course combines lecturer input, group work, discussions, on and offline assignments, student presentations and hands-on experience with data.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Student assessment is based on active participation in class, online assignments, regular readings, oral poster presentation and the PS paper.
For the paper each student will choose an aspect related to vocabulary knowledge, explore it in more detail and conduct a small-scale study. Further information will be provided in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance (max. 2 absences)

Part 1: Class participation, readings, smaller assignments, discussions… 10%
Part 2: Poster presentation in class 25%
Part 3: Paper proposal (including study proposal) 20%
Part 4: PS paper (3500 ± 10%) 45%

89-80% 2
79-70% 3
69-60% 4
59-0% 5

All parts (1,2,3,4) must be completed and at least 3 out of 4 parts must be positive. The overall pass mark is 60%.

Prüfungsstoff

Continuous assessment based on what was covered in class, details will be given in class and on Moodle.

Literatur

Materials will be provided in class and via the Moodle platform.
