Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
One of the most interesting features of language is its constant variability both on diachronic and synchronic dimension. Analysing the development of the new meanings of words as well as the lectal variation in their use can be a life long fascination. This seminar offers a hands on experience in investigating these interesting phenomena. It starts with an analysis of several case studies on semantic extension and constructional change.

* Doing the assigned reading (-5% of the final grade for failing to read and understand the assigned material)
* Participation in class discussion
* Fulfilling the in-class tasks (40% of the final grade)
* Writing an essay presenting a small-scale corpus based study (60% of the final grade)

This seminar offers and overview of studies on language variation and change and will aquaint students with a number of qualitative and quantitative methods of analyzing them.
