Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students are assessed on the basis of assignments, participation, paper proposal, presentation (at the mini-conference) and written seminar paper. Paper proposal, presentation and seminar paper are based on the small-scale research project each student will select and work on during the semester.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Course evaluation is based on:
*) class participation, reading and assignments (max. 15 points)
*) paper proposal (max. 15 points)
*) oral presentation (max. 10 points)
*) seminar paper (max. 60 points)The minimum requirements for passing the course are:
(a) regular class attendance (max. 2 absences) and attendance of seminar conference
(b) handing in paper proposal (on time)
(c) giving the oral presentation (on set date)
(d) handing in the seminar paper (on time)
(e) attaining 60 of the maximum of 100 points.Final grades & points achieved:
Sehr gut: 90-100; Gut: 80-89; Befriedigend: 70-79; Genügend: 60-69; Nicht Genügend: 0-59

Throughout the semester, students will work independently on an individual topic. They will either a) analyze ELF data from the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE), a one-million-word corpus of recorded and transcribed real-world ELF interactions, or b) critically analyze and discuss documents related to English language teaching and consider practical implications of ELF for ELT.Aims:
Students will have an overview of the recent phenomenon, characteristics and terminology related to English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). They are familiar with general topics of ELF research and able to discuss critically what the global spread of English has meant/means for language use and might mean for English Language Teaching.
They are able to carry out a small descriptive and/or applied linguistic research project on ELF based on sound theoretical and methodological background.N.B.: Presentations will be blocked at a seminar conference on June 3 (14.00-20.00) & June 4 (8.00-14.00).
