Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course deals with the lexicon as a main resource within the human language faculty. The questions pursued are among others: what characterizes the lexicon as a linguistic resource? What types of theories and descriptions has linguistics produced? What tools are there to analyse lexical aspects of language? What are the psychobiological dimensions of the lexicon and what is its role in acquisition?
During an initial input phase we will discuss general and theoretical questions as well as research strategies, preparing the participants for their own projects. These projects will normally involve analysing the lexical phenomena in the spoken and written production of different users of English (native and non-native, learners and expert users).

Aims:
Participants will
-know a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the lexicon.
-get to read and evaluate current research literature on the lexicon
-undertake an analysis of a small text corpus according to a specific theoretical and methodological perspective chosen by them.

Methods:
mini-lectures, readings, interactive discussion, group work, assignments, presentations, individual research

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

ongoing - based on written and oral contributions
Submission of a final research paper is obligatory.
