Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
It is a well-known fact that the English language is full of fixed, collocational/colligational phrases (e.g. ladies and gentlemen, break up; looking forward to +ing) and semi-specified constructions (drive X crazy; Have you ever X ?) which often have fixed, fully specified elements but also open slots which can be filled by various elements. These constructions sometimes have idiomatic meaning and sometimes have syntactic structures which deviate from the normal English default word order. In this course we will investigate such constructions empirically (frequency and function, variation, change, genre preferences).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
In this interactive blocked course, students will choose a specific colligation or semi-specified construction and write a seminar paper about it. The paper will be empirical (corpus-based analysis using the COCA, COHA, BNC ). To prepare for this paper, the students will write a paper proposal and give a 20 min presentation in which they present preliminary results.
