Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar deals with Old English as represented in textual witnesses of diverse genres (covering Heroic Poems, religious and philosophical texts, legal codices, etc.). Each participant will select a short passage from an Old English text, analyse it in phonological, morphological and syntactic terms and produce a commented translation into Present Day English Prose. Additionally participants will be encouraged to elaborate, in their papers, on specific problem they have encountered in their analyses.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of their participation in discussions, the oral presentation of their analyses, and a seminar-paper like portfolio consisting of phonological, morphological and syntactic analyses of Old English, a translation, and a brief discussion of a problem of their choice.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The objective of this course is to familiarize ourselves with Old English well enough to be able to understand and enjoy texts that have been written in it. Making use of dictionaries and grammars, we shall develop our analytic skills by trying to cope with a language that is related to Present Day English but at the same time so different that coming to terms with it represents a real challenge.

Prüfungsstoff

In an introductory phase, we shall familiarize ourselves with Old English and practice analysing bits of text on various structural levels. During the rest of the seminar, student will report on their own analyses, on the problems they encounter and on the ways in which they intend to address them. The issues and proposals they bring up will be discussed by all participants.
