Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar focuses on a wide spectrum of issues from several disciplines which operate within the functionalist paradigm. Apart from purely pragmatic notions, like implicature, speech acts or deixis, numerous borderline cases will be discussed which straddle the border of pragmatics and related disciplines. Thus, the borderline between pragmatics and sociolinguistics includes such notions as address forms, politeness or directness, whereas phenomena like advertising, propaganda, or various types of argumentation represent the borderline between pragmatics and discourse analysis. Moreover, the interface of pragmatics and text linguistics will be tackled in the analysis of written texts from the point of view of their degree of textuality.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

An oral presentation of the selected paper topic (an abstract is required either as a power point, a transparency, or a hand-out), the participation in the discussion, and the written version of the paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of the course is the overall result of the oral presentation, the participation in the discussion, and the written version of the paper.
