Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, we will explore different strands of discourse analysis within an overall applied linguistic framework. By keeping the aim of English language teaching in mind, we will describe and analyse spoken and written discourse in social and institutional settings. Introducing a range of resources and techniques for analysing text and dialogue, the sessions will be structured around the presentation and discussion of one particular area of discourse analysis. Each week, there will be a key reading which course participants are expected to read and think about in advance.
This course consists of three main parts: introduction to discourse analysis as seen from an applied linguistic perspective; hands-on experience in analysing spoken and written discourse on the basis of language corpora; student projects on one particular approach to discourse analysis and how it could be adapted for English language teaching.
