Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The language we use to express our emotions has been approached from many different research perspectives, among them Natural Semantic Metalanguage, Conceptual Metaphor Theory and diachronic semantics. A number of research questions have been posed: (1) is it possible to create a tool for description of emotion terms that would be culture neutral? (2) are there any culture universal emotions? (3) how are emotions conceptualised and expressed in language? (4) how does the meaning of emotion terms change over time? These and similar questions will preoccupy us during this seminar.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of in-class participation, solving in-class tasks (continuous assessment 50%) and a final test (50%).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

To aquaint students with the selected literature on the conceptualisation and linguistic expression of emotions, to sensitize them to ways in which emotions are described and expressed.

Prüfungsstoff

Reading, class discussions, solving in-class tasks, presentations.
