Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will start with a review of literature on cognitive processess grounding metaphor, such as image schemata and embodiement. Then it will move to a discussion of conceptual metaphor and metonymy and place cognitive linguistics in an interdisciplinary context. The next step of the course will be an attempt to define collective memory as proposed in social history. Each class will also offer a hands-on experience with analysing texts and visual art (memorials) with the help of cognitive linguistic tools. The course will finish with a series of presentations by the participants offering their own original analyses of the use of metaphor and metonymy in discourses of collective memory.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The evaluation of the course is two-fold:

1. Group presentation (50%)

2. Student's individual presentation (50%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will be able to use cognitive linguistic tools, such as image schemata, metaphors and metonymies to analyse and describe verbal and non-verbal processes and representations of meaning construction. They will be able to reflect on universal cognitive principles underlying meaning making in discourse.
