Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture course provides an introduction to the history, literature and the cultural context of the Early Modern Period, starting from the Tudors (1485) and ending at the Restoration (1660). It will present an illustrated survey of the development of drama, poetry and, selectively, of prose literature of the time, complete with close readings of selected poems and plays. Particular attention will be given to the plays of Marlowe and Shakespeare and to the poetry of Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, John Donne and Donne's followers amongst the "Metaphysical Poets".

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements: The final (written) exam will test the students' ability to interpret some of the texts on the reading list, detailed and in-depth knowledge of the subject matter presented in the 13 lecture units; the final exam (no multiple choice questionnaire!!!) consists of a short creative essay, a set of specific questions on authors, works, theories, background, terminology etc., and at least one interpretation of a poem or a passage from a play. (An example of a final exam questionnaire will be uploaded to the e-learning platform in March).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: Introducing first-and second-year students of English into the political, cultural and literary history of the English Renaissance and early Neoclassical Age; advancing students' skills in interpreting poems, plays and prose works within the given cultural and religious contexts; introducing students to the distinctive features of different styles of writing, theories of drama and poetry, as well as familiarizing them with the Elizabethan mindset, world-view and gender roles; advancing students' cross-cultural understanding.

Prüfungsstoff

Multi-media based teaching (PPT, internet, audio and/or video presentations of songs, plays and films) combined with interactive teaching, and the use of the e-learning platform (Moodle).

Reading:
Obligatory reading of the texts on the "Reading List" (will be posted early in March); it will include Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and "As You Like It".

Note: A study-guide (hardcopy) containing the basic outline of the subject matter dealt with in class will be offered after Easter.
