A reader containing text excerpts, important dates, facts and summaries will be available at the beginning of the term. Students are expected to prepare for - and accompany - this survey by an intensive reading of the major works dealt with (Henry Fielding, "Joseph Andrews"; Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice"; J.M. Synge, "The Playboy of the Western World"; Joseph Conrad, "Heart of Darkness"; Samuel Beckett, "Waiting for Godot"; Julian Barnes, "Flaubert's Parrot"), and an individual reading of selected chapters from a literary history of their choice - for example, Michael Alexander, "A History of English Literature" (Macmillan pb); Andrew Sanders, "The Short Oxford History of English Literature" (Oxford UP); Ulrich Seeber (ed.), "Englische Literaturgeschichte" (Metzler). Many of the texts discussed may be found in the Norton or the Arnold Anthology of British Literature.
