Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

- students have acquired a general overview of Anglophone literatures in North America from a diachronic perspective
- students can differentiate between different literary genres in terms of their development
- students can reflect critically about canon formation

Contents: Native American oral literature; Colonial American Literatures (from Columbus to the Puritans); Writing during the Revolution; the early Republic; Antebellum American Literatures; The Civil War and Reconstruction; the late 19th century; modernism; postmodernism; Canadian literature, Caribbean literature; contemporary trends.
Including one film session, one guest lecture on Asian American Literatures
Methods: Lecture course (with interactive elements)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Final written test covering the required reading and the topics and materials discussed in the individual lectures

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Assessment will be based on the score achieved in the final written test.
Please note: This lecture course will be accompanied by a tutorial, which serves as a forum for the in-depth analysis and revision of key concepts, topics, and readings introduced and covered in the lectures. Please check the announcement on the Moodle platform at the beginning of term of details!

Prüfungsstoff

Participants are expected to read, and critically engage with, all set texts on the reading list. The final written test will cover the required reading and the topics and materials discussed in the lectures.
