Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In her discussion of biography as a masculine historiographic practice, Jean Strouse argues that 'what we know of history has been shaped by the careers of famous men' ('Semiprivate Lives' 113). This course centres on gender-theoretically informed approaches to biography, which will be applied to a wide range of life-writing by, and about, ‘notable’ women of the past two centuries, such as Clara Wieck Schumann, Dr. J. Barry, Gertrude Stein, Virginia Woolf, and Sylvia Plath. We will examine representations of women’s experiences in different genres, focusing on the biographee’s position in the sex/gender system of her respective historical and cultural context.

Students are expected to present a paper of 8-10 minutes at a mini-conference on 12 January (Sat, 10am-4pm). Participation in the mini-conference is obligatory!

There will be no classes on 17 & 31 January.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This class aims at -) advancing students' theoretical and practical skills in the critical analysis of literary texts; -) familiarising students with the basic skills and techniques required for writing an academic paper; -) acquainting participants with critical concepts central to the subject matter of women’s life writing
