Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents: The introductory seminar consists of several theoretical units intended to advance students' knowledge in literary theory, methodology and literary analysis; some units will be devoted to the development of practical skills in acquiring research materials as well as the practice of analysing literary texts of the three major genres. Participants will also be provided with the basic guidelines for writing an academic research paper in the area of English literary studies. Students will be familiarized with the use of relevant electronic databases, conventional bibliographies, the MLA style sheet as well as the most important reference books, and will be instructed in 'the correct practice of academic writing' i.e. how to obviate the charge of plagiarism. Thematically the texts offered to the participants for their presentations will focus on varieties of parent-child relationships through the centuries, featuring in texts (poems, short stories and a play) by Chaucer, Shakespeare, Joyce, Hardy, Scott Fitzgerald, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne, T. C. Boyle and several other contemporary writers.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements: Regular attendance, active participation in all discussions in class, one presentation per participant (20 mins); type-written PS-paper in English (min. 3,000 words), which must be written individually by each participant (the PS paper must be handed in at the appointed date); a final test to be written in the final lesson in class (which will require a thorough knowledge of all the handouts, texts and topics dealt with during the semester).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: To advance students' theoretical knowledge in the areas of Anglophone literary and cultural studies and their practical interpretative skills as well as their competence in literary criticism; to expand their personal reading canon and knowledge of literary history; to further develop students`cross-cultural understanding and expertise in writing research papers, and to enhance their proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Prüfungsstoff

Methods: interactive, computer-aided teaching supported by the e-learning platform Moodle; some teacher-centred introductory units will be followed by interactive student-centred units; PPT presentations by students and forum discussion.

Literatur

Texts: Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet" (preferably Arden Pb or Oxford Pb edition; students are requested to acquire a copy of their own); a "Reader" containing the poems and short stories will be provided. (Details will follow by circular mail to participants).
