In this proseminar we will look at US-literature after 1945, specifically at texts which have been generally labelled as postmodern. We will differentiate between postmodernity (the contemporary social and cultural situation) and postmodernism (theories developed in the second half of the 20th century). Issues such as late capitalism, post-industrial society a rising focus on ethnic writing but also the influence of (new) media on and depicted in literary texts.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The overall aim of the proseminar is to help you develop a firmly-based yet independent critical approach to literary texts. You will be given a grounding in various skills and techniques required for the writing of academic papers such as close reading skills; the use of works of reference; the use and evaluation of secondary literature; theory and practice of critical analysis; the correct use of literary terminology.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Presentation of research projects; participation in class; reading assignments; academic term paper.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Text- & context-based approaches to the study of literature and culture. Presentation skills. Academic research and writing skills. Final test.

Interactive debate & presentation. Textual & cultural analysis. Individual research & academic writing.
