Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will focus on aspects and notions of Jewish North American writing with some stress on Jewish Canadian literature. Displacement, alienation and exile have become necessary paradigms in the 20th century and constitutive modes for identity formations. We will investigate constructions of Jewish identities from the late 19th century up to the present, and look at the employment, refusal of and toying with grand North American narratives such as the American dream, Manifest Destiny in connection with Jewish traditions. An important focus will also be on art and writing about the Holocaust. This is not an all encompassing history of Jewish North American writing, and although I have chosen the texts for this class with some care, we will be dealing with aspects and aspects only.
Novels, poems, cartoons and movies to be dealt with: Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers (1921), David Gow's play Cherry Docs (1998), Henry Kreisel's short story collection The Almost Meeting (1981), Woody Allen's Zelig (1983) and Art Spiegelman's Maus (1991) and various poems by Emma Lazarus, Eli Mandel, Leonard Cohen, and others.
