Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will examine canonical and non-canonical works from a variety of genres as well as a range of themes within Asian American literature from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Beginning with the term ‘Asian American’, which encompasses a striking cultural plurality (Chinese American, Japanese American, Korean American, Filipino American, Vietnamese American, among many others), the course aims to explore the emergence and development of Asian American literary traditions, thereby underscoring the dynamic relationship between Asian American writing and the histories of Asians in the United States. Central to this exploration will be the intersection of aesthetics and politics in which notions of identity, belonging, and home are contested, interrogated, and re-imagined in parallel with discussions of race, ethnicity, and gender.

Time and schedule permitting during the semester, a contemporary Asian American writer (to be announced) may be invited to speak remotely as well as field questions from students.
