Multicultural London in Contemporary Fiction
Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung
Labels
What, exactly, does it mean to call London a contemporary multicultural metropolis? Starting from recent theories of urban space from Doreen Masseys World City (2010) and Danny Dorlings The 32 Stops on the Central Line (2013), this course on contemporary London literature offers different views of the city by Black, Asian, and immigrant British writers. The literature challenges popular and mainstream images of the city and exposes key issues of British culture and multiculturalism. The different perspectives on the city are enabled by close reading and analysis of one novel, a play, short stories and poetry. Essay writing skills will be covered throughout the course in preparation for a final analytical essay.
