Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This literary studies seminar on US-American dramatic texts is designed to cover three key dimensions: It offers a historical survey of US-American dramatic literary tradition, a discussion of theories of the genre and media specific practices, and a space to hone and practice formal dramatic analysis and interpretation.
We will discuss aesthetic genre traditions and how US-American drama evolves as a hybrid of 19th century precedents of commercial stage productions and transatlantic lines of modernist drama. We will discuss how it draws on and emancipates itself from influences such as Strindberg, Chekhov, Ibsen, and how Realist and Naturalist tendencies as well as Expressionist and Epic Theater impact its early forms and content. The class covers canonical theory and texts from Glaspell to Miller, Williams and contemporary plays. Our readings aim to explore African American, feminist, queer, and postcolonial playwrighting and to make room for student choices and interests.
