Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This class will focus on the analysis of examples of short fiction from Britain, with a focus on 21st century publications. Students will explore what the shortness of short fiction actually means, will look at ridiculously short fiction (6 words!), and discuss the implications of shortness. All this will of course be based on wide theoretical reading and close textual and contextual analysis of a number of short stories which considerably vary in size but are all equally up for critical scrutiny from a number of perspectives. At the same time, students will learn how to define research questions, compose abstracts, structure and plan a term paper and put conventions of academic writing into practice.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance is obligatory. Two absences will be excused (no need to let me know in advance, unless you have taken over a presentation or something similar).
Assessment is based on the following:
• A research question and abstract (max. 10 pts)
• An academic paper of 6000 words (max. 55 pts)
• Attendance and active participation in class and at SE conference (max. 15 pts)
• A presentation at the seminar conference (20 pts)

If any of these are not handed in or fulfilled at all, you cannot pass this class.
Max. 100 pts; Pass rate: 60%
Grading scale:
100-91 Sehr Gut
90-81 Gut
80-71 Befriedigend
70-60 Genügend
59-0 Nicht Genügend

Literatur

A short story reader will be provided at the beginning of term. Please bring some money to the first class so you can buy it. Theoretical texts will be made available on moodle.
