Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students will become acquainted with trauma theory, its relation to narrative, with various types of trauma (individual, communal, intergenerational) and their reflections in the novel, and with selected topics related to the representation of trauma.

4) Kristeva's Concept of the 'Abject': Black Workers on the Farm

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Class participation, oral presentation (20-30 minutes), essay (15-17 pages - for BA students writing their BA thesis 25-27 pages), and final written test.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The students will learn how different aspects of trauma theory may be applied to the analysis of the contemporary South African trauma novel. They will gain insight into the different ways in which the novelists 'speak about the unspeakable', and literature's functions with regard to a traumatised country.

Prüfungsstoff

Oral presentations followed by discussion, e-learning platform.
